Building reflections

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program allows students to study two different academic concentrations and combine them into one bachelor’s degree.  A student selects two areas of concentration to study, for example small business management and urban planning, they also participate in four BIS courses that help integrate the two concentrations into one degree.  The BIS program requires students to take 15 hours of credit in each concentration area and complete the 12 hours of credit for the BIS portion.  The main focus is integrating the two concentrations to be a more versatile professional in the real world, rather than be experienced in one field.

I chose the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program because I was able to studying two different areas of interest to me.  I was having a hard time deciding whether I wanted to pursue a business degree or an urban planning degree, the BIS program allowed me to do both and help connect the two concentrations for real world application.  The BIS program was beneficial to me because it allowed me to graduate on time and get out in the professional world and start making money.

Small business management prepares students to go into business for themselves.  Throughout this concentration items such as business plans, advertising, and marketing are topics that are consistently being covered.  Students look at case studies of different companies and how they became successful and continue to grow versus their competition that have gone out of business.  Another large aspect of the small business concentration is working in groups, which is something that happens often in the business world.

The urban planning concentration covers a variety of land issue and city planning topics that have been completed in the past or are planned for the future.  Urban planning students have the opportunity to study the history and origins of urban planning from the first civilization all the way through to today’s society and see how we have adapted over time.  Urban planning is essential in the development and redevelopment across America; many older cities have a need for redevelopment due to new demands for city living and business.
